As the ongoing lawsuit against Activision Blizzard for fostering a “pervasive frat boy culture” within the workplace continues to cast a shadow over the company, World of Warcraft has seen multiple in-game changes.
The character known initially as “Gorge the Corpsegrinder” was based on Cannibal Corpse vocalist George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher. Encountered in the game’s Borean Tundra region, the NPC was an Orc commander in the Horde faction with a particular dislike for Night Elves and Gnomes.
The interview in question originated from 2007, and aired at the 2011 BlizzCon event. Fisher spoke about his love for World of Warcraft and playing for the Horde, but he called the rival faction, the Alliance, the “homo-alliance” and referred to those players as “cocksuckers.”
According to a recent WoWhead article, Gorge the Corpsegrinder will soon be renamed Annihilator Grek’lor to distance him from Fisher. This isn't the first time Blizzard committed to renaming a character who had previously been named after a divisive figure, but the connection between Gorge the Corpsegrinder and Fisher seems to be a bit more distant than the connection between Overwatch's Jesse McCree and the real-life Jesse McCree, a former employee at Blizzard. Some fans have raised questions about why Gorge the Corpsegrinder was judged important enough to rename when players are still raising complaints about World of Warcraft's mechanics.
The interview had made an appearance at Blizzcon, Blizzard’s annual fan convention, in 2011, prompting Michael Morhaime – the developer’s co-founder and, at the time, president – to issue an apology. However, the in-game character’s name stayed until now. The newly monikered Grek’lor is live in World of Warcraft’s public test realm now, with the change expected to roll out to all players of the PC MMO soon.
Blizzard’s then-president and co-founder, Michael Morhaime, issued an immediate apology, but Corpegrinder’s name remained in the game until now. Pressure from the game’s fanbase likely led to the decision.
It appears that many World of Warcraft fans are underwhelmed by the decision to change Gorge the Corpsegrinder's name. However, others seem to be quite satisfied with Blizzard's choice, or at least agree that Fisher's words mean he should not be represented within the game. The changes will be implemented in the upcoming 9.1.5 patch.
It’s worth noting that gaming culture has often been criticized for this exact reason, especially in the recent past. Anyone who played Xbox Live or an online game in 2007 can attest to how commonplace homophobic slurs became in the online-gaming lexicon. Finally, it appears developers are putting their foot down when it comes to this behavior.
