Bless Unleashed is a free-to-play MMORPG on the Xbox One. Developed by Round 8 Studio and NEOWIZ, it’s essentially a reboot of the now defunct Bless Online.
Visually, Bless Unleashed doesn’t look bad. However, it isn’t the most impressive Unreal Engine game on Xbox One. This is coupled with the fact that many of the NPCs look identical, or with slight variations to their hair color that it each character just doesn’t feel unique enough to care about their struggles. This isn’t to say that every character is this way. I really want to know more about the formidable Don Diego as well as the assassin-turned-farmhand Morta Marco.
Bless Unleashed naturally features different classes and races and they're all pretty standard for an MMO game. There are warrior classes like the Crusader and Berserker, magical classes like Priest and Mage, and of course the Ranger for those who like bows. There's nothing really here that sets the classes apart from other comparable games - it's a tried and true class system that works nearly as well here as it has in countless games before it, and the game offers something for every kind of player.
MMORPG are traditionally behind the curse graphically, and Bless Unleashed is no exception; however, that is not to say Bless Unleashed is not a great looking game, as it really is, and when compared to many Korean MMORPG which still use unreal engine 3, a game built on unreal engine 4 looks stunning.
Grinding can be fun, and it’s a part of every major MMO out there. But if the systems that surround the gameplay grind are as unpolished as Bless Unleashed is, that grind can truly be grating. Bless Unleashed has you grinding not just for levels, but also experience to level up your skills and, most importantly, gear. Gear Score in Bless Unleashed is just as important – if not moreso – than your actual character level. Finding gear at varying rarities and upgrading them in the MMO’s crafting system is integral to moving along in the story.
Combat is where Bless Unleashed should really shine – and in fact the trailers make it look incredibly fluid and flashy. And compared to Bless Online it’s a definite improvement. However, Bless is let down considerably by its 30fps cap – a framerate that it doesn’t feel like it maintains during fights occasionally - and the input lag that introduces. Honestly, especially for Xbox One X users, a 1080p/60fps target mode like we’ve seen in many other games would have helped here tremendously.
Bless Unleashed is a decent enough free-to-play MMORPG that should keep players looking for something they don't have to shell cash out entertained. And luckily, there isn't anything in the cash shop that screams "pay to win," which is something that so many other free-to-play titles have unfortunately succumbed to. There are quite a lot of technical problems, from slow loading textures to combat that really needs some tweaking. but for being one of the first MMO games to exclusively launch on Xbox One, well, it could have been a lot worse.
