FIFA 17 is only a few months old, but EA is hard at work on this year’s version
Enjoying FIFA 17? Of course you are – and yet you wouldn’t be here if there wasn’t a tiny bit of you already thinking ahead to the next instalment. FIFA 18’s release date is still some way away, but we’re beginning to get a few details.
While information about FIFA 18 is pretty thin on the ground at the moment, we’ll continue updating this page as we get more information. Here’s what we know about FIFA 18 so far.
FIFA 18: Features
You may think there’s only so much you can tweak a game where the rules of the sport it’s based on have barely shifted in over 100 years. That’s true to a degree, but EA usually have an innovative trick up their sleeves beyond just a squad numbers and kits update.
The first bit of news we have about FIFA 18 is that it will see the return of the brilliant story mode: The Journey. “FIFA 18 will build on the foundation we created with story mode this year, bringing players back to The Journey with Season 2, featuring new characters and new storylines,” said EA CEO Andrew Wilson.
“Our development team in Vancouver is delivering deeply innovative new experiences across this year's game, including an Ultimate Team, and creating the most emotionally immersive and connected FIFA we have ever produced.”
The Journey was brilliant but flawed – you can read a deeper assessment of why I think that over at our sister site Alphr – but it’s unsurprising that the mode is coming back for second helpings. EA revealed that it had been played over 10 million times, which isn’t bad going for a new game mode. It’s not yet clear if Alex Hunter will feature at all, or if his story is finished for the time being.
FIFA 18: Formats
That FIFA 18 will appear on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC is a no-brainer. The good news is that after a period away from Nintendo, FIFA 18 will make the series debut on the Switch. The last time FIFA appeared on a Nintendo console was FIFA 13 as a Wii U launch title.
Other than current generations of Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony consoles, we’re not sure. FIFA 17 did appear on Xbox 360 and PS3, but it used a different engine and didn’t feature The Journey. I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled the same trick again, but the series must be approaching its final years on last generation hardware.
FIFA 18: Release date
Nobody knows the FIFA 18 release date for sure yet, but we can hazard a pretty good guess. Here’s the release dates of the last decade’s worth of FIFA games:

FIFA 08 20/09/07
FIFA 09 03/10/08
FIFA 10 02/10/09
