The latest data from GSD reveals that FIFA 22's physical boxed sales dropped 34% compared with last year's game. However, digital downloads grew 37%. Overall, 77% of FIFA 22's opening week sales were via digital stores.

Electronic Arts Inc (NASDAQ:EA) shares rose 1.6% Friday after its FIFA 22 game hit the top of the September charts in the UK after just one week, according to Gameindustry.biz.

This doesn't mean FIFA underperformed. Indeed, last year, FIFA 21's launch download sales were up 31% compared with the year before, marking the first time more people downloaded FIFA in the UK than bought it in a box. We will see the download performance for FIFA 22 later in the week when the GSD charts are released.

It means last week's No.1, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, unsurprisingly drops to No.2. But it was still a good week for Mario Kart, which enjoyed a 15% sales rise week-on-week. It is the third consecutive week of sales growth for the Nintendo game.

The only thing for certain is that 41% of FIFA 22 sales were on PlayStation 4, with 27% on Xbox One, 23% on PlayStation 5, 5% on Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S last with just 4%. The latter’s poor performance is explained by the fact that most Xbox boxes are dual format.

Last year, 62% of FIFA 21's sales were downloads. FIFA 21 was the first time more copies of a FIFA game was downloaded over being bought in a box (at launch). That number did shrink over time, however. By the end of its first year, FIFA 21's sales were 52% digital.

Dring went on to say that overall, during September 2021, FIFA 22 sales in the UK amounted to 3.36 million (2.26 million digital and 1.1 million physical).

The report adds to the positive news for EA's game sales this week after NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said Monday that EA's "Madden NFL 22" was the best-selling game in the U.S. for September.
