Technically, it’s news to someone even if it is almost a week old! While we were all shoving handfuls of food into our gaping maws during the silly season (how do you make mince out of fruit and turn it into a pie asking for a friend), developer GSC Game World dropped a new trailer showing off STALKER 2’s first-person atmosphere.
GSC said in a news release on Dec. 31 that the trailer represents “how the game actually feels: fast-paced change of scenery, ominous landscapes and the ever-present feeling of an inevitable danger accompanied by a barely-distinguishable guitar soundtrack.” According to the description on YouTube, the trailer is shot entirely in-engine and through the eyes of the player character, a stalker named Skif.
It might be a stretch to call this a gameplay teaser, but GSC Game World says it is all rendered in-engine, which is impressive enough by itself. The developers say work on Stalker 2 is "progressing smoothly", and they plan to support ray-tracing on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with 4K visuals for the beefier console. It will be available as an Xbox Game Pass title as soon as it launches, though the studio isn't ready to share a release date just yet.
Xbox Wire has recently revealed some new details about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, via a blog post from GSC Game World PR Specialist Zakhar Bocharov. Bocharov's post adds additional context to last year's gameplay trailer, explaining the scenario and what it tells us about the game as a whole. The post also confirms that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, like each previous game in the series, stars a brand new protagonist rather than continuing the story of a past character. Bocharov concludes by reporting that development of the game is going smoothly, particular on Xbox Series X/S, and assuring fans that the game will launch on Xbox Game Pass the first day of release.
There aren’t too many details to glean from the trailer, other than the fact that Chernobyl’s irradiated exclusion zone looks about as tourist-friendly as visiting a Manchester pub while wearing a Liverpool top. It’s ominous, everything is coated in Baytanium judging by how flammable ordinary objects are, and it’s probably fashionable to mutate a few extra eyeballs if you call the radioactive-wrecked Zone your home.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise boasts a large fanbase of diehard players who appreciate the series' atmosphere, gameplay and world-building. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 seems to be carrying on this legacy, bringing a classic survival experience into the modern age of gaming. With a new engine, new protagonist, and new foes to face, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 might be exactly what fans need.
