NEW ENGLAND Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski has been suspended for one game following a brutal late hit that left Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White with concussion.

In Sunday’s game, Gronkowski smashed his forearm into White’s helmet as the Bills player lay defenceless on the ground after he had intercepted a Tom Brady pass.

Gronkowski was penalised for unnecessary roughness but was not ejected from the game. White was forced to leave the game with a head injury and entered the concussion protocol.

The NFL said in a statement that Gronkowski had been banned for a violation of unnecessary roughness rules during the Patriots’ victory over Buffalo on Monday (AEDT).

“Your actions were not incidental, could have been avoided and placed the opposing player at risk of serious injury,” NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan told Gronkowski in a letter.

“The competition committee has clearly expressed its goal of eliminating flagrant hits that have no place in our game,” Runyan added.

Bills players later condemned Gronkowski’s actions.

“That’s just dirty football,” Bills safety Micah Hyde said. “There’s nowhere in our game for that.” Bills safety Jordan Poyer suggested Gronkowski escaped ejection because of his profile as one of the stars of the Patriots outfit.

“Anybody else makes that type of play, they’re ejected,” Poyer said. “To me, it was blatant. He WWE’d him. It’s like he was in the wrestling arena again.” Gronkowski later said sorry for the stiff-arm, but claimed White had shoved him illegally beforehand to make the interception.

“I definitely want to apologise to No. 27,” Gronkowski said. “I’m not in the business of that.

“I feel like he kind of pushed me a little bit and made the play. I just don’t understand why there was no flag... I mean, it was just frustration and that’s what happened.”
