EA will release NHL 18 next year but this time will the game be upgrade to Frostbite engine? This move made by EA has been described as, “Exponential Leaps Forward”.
The Chief Executive Officer of Electronic Arts’, Andrew Wilson on the date of Investor Day, openly talked about their move of going for Frostbite as a single engine for their coming games and updates. Further Wilson explained that the company used to utilize over twenty engines a few years ago, but now they’re on a journey to have only one. The essence of this move lies in the fact that the companies are operating in a world where they develop games not for one or two platforms but for almost twenty or thirty platforms, not only this also the transitions in today’s date are made on yearly basis not once in six years. So, when working in an environment like this it would be very beneficial for the company to have a single engine allows EA to bring all of its games to any and all new platforms that players want to play on, and that’s possible in a cost-effective manner.
The technology is growing at rapid speed and it is becoming difficult to catch up with it, from the PS2 to the PS3 generation research and development costs almost doubled and the quality of Electronic Arts’ games on the new platforms was not that good and satisfactory. The reason being the company and the developers were investing more time and money on every engine to deliver every game. The time being spent on working with each Engine can rather be utilized to improve the technology and development of the Game.
The company is doing its best to run swiftly on every platform, be it PS3, PS4 to Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The publishers are spending a lot on the compatibility of the game with each platform but in concern with quality there has not been much progress since the R&D costs remained flat.
Working with one engine only allows developers to invest all their time and efforts into it which results in delivering a high quality game that is both cost efficient, quick and flexible to changes and runs smoothly on all the platforms. According to Wilson that’s going to continue to pay dividends in the future, with multiple things innovating on top of it, enabling “exponential leaps forward” in the ability to deliver “unbelievable games” every year.
EA Studios Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund also approved to this idea, he joined EA sometime back and then there used to be around 16 engines but this idea of working with one engine essentially, frostbite has been thought of since 12 years back and now finally it is the time it will be executed.
Creating an Engine requires a lot of time and in that context data reveals that developers spend almost 70% of the time on working of the Engine and only 30% on the Game. This is in no manner an optimum utilization of the time, it is all about the Game that is being developed and a major portion of time and efforts should be dedicated to the development of the Game only. For that the Company needs to have a substitute and that is one single engine for each game.
Söderlund mentioned that the journey to get to a single engine is “almost complete” and this year we can expect to see “more games” moved to Frostbite and FIFA 17 was already released with Frostbite engine.
EA is moving almost all its games to Frostbite Engine and this jump would work in its favor only, features like net code optimization, development tools, performance etc all would improve with this move. It would be a great move because then the debug time will be reduced and also the Graphics and animations would be so much more amazing and fun. Yet it would take some time by the people to completely adjust with the new system so EA might want people to get acquainted with it once then it would release the first working with Frostbite that might be with NHL 18, NHL 19, NHL 20 or NHL 21. It will be interesting to see which version of the game will be come feature Frostbite engine.
