The first expansion pack after the 2004 launch of World of Warcraft and now the first sweeping change for World of Warcraft Classic, The Burning Crusade soon reminds fans of why they adored the original experience so much and also, why it frustrated them. Nostalgia is a tricky one to pin down but, for the most part, The Burning Crusade continues World of Warcraft Classic‘s ability to remain true to form every step of the way.
The game's first expansion, however, poses an interesting question to its users - how much can Blizzard change without sacrificing the identity of the Classic experience? A level boost being offered to players who purchase it was a major WoW: The Burning Crusade Classic controversy in the buildup to launch, but in the weeks since, the issue has largely fallen by the wayside in the wake of adventurers taking up arms in Outland as part of the expansion. For the most part, the level boost is a modern day convenience that does little to affect the experience of The Burning Crusade Classic, which remains impressive in its scope and its features for a game that originally released in 2007.
Nowadays grinding has become a dirty word in games, but in Burning Crusade Classic it was a badge of honor. And even though I've had moments where I've felt frustrated or bored—even to the point of quitting—my patience is reset every time I have a cool encounter with another player. It's not very often that I play an MMO where complete strangers routinely find a place on my friends list. Twice now I've sat with another player waiting for a quest objective to respawn and been drawn into a conversation that led to us joining forces for a few hours. These moments feel as special as they did over a decade ago.
One aspect of Hellfire Peninsula which has surprisingly lost its sheen is the Fell Revers. I’m not sure how I was ever surprised by them the first time around. They have a distinctive sound and can be seen so far away that the concept of them just suddenly appearing seems odd. And yet, I distinctly remember them appearing as if out of nowhere and stomping my face more than a few times. I have a much better sound system, and of course, I can play on much higher graphics settings now. After all, I played on laptop computers through Cataclysm. Plus, obviously, technology has come pretty far since 2007.
There are new dungeons and raids too, of course. Dungeon runs are relatively easy to get involved with thanks to it being the usual bunch of five players. You’ll need to pick carefully as, like with the rest of World of Warcraft Classic, you really do need the traditional composition of a tank, healer, and DPS to get the most out of them.
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic is more of the same; a time capsule that successfully protects and recreates the experience of a 2007 MMORPG expansion and brings it to 2021 with deftness and care. It's not a perfect expansion - certainly by modern day standards especially - but it's also not trying to be. With that in mind, it's hard not to recommend The Burning Crusade Classic to anyone who longs for the old days of MMORPG grinding, and it's a great history lesson for those who missed out on that generation of games if they have the patience for it.
