World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic is the first expansion for Blizzard's nostalgic return to the early days of its innovative fantasy MMORPG. WoW Classic has been both an interesting social experiment and a showcase for how to return to a property with its playerbase prioritized first; the latter being demonstrated in the preservation of all the warts and relics of game design that are scattered throughout the Azeroth of the Classic base game.
That's the enduring black magic of World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Classic. It's a crucible of soul-crushing grinding and unforgiving combat that smashes players together like atoms, sparking chain reactions that forge new friendships with impressive regularity. But sustaining those ongoing reactions requires an unfathomable sacrifice of time and energy that makes my heart yearn for the years when I was a teenager with all the time in the world. Burning Crusade Classic is awesome, but you'll have to give up a significant chunk of your life to experience all of it.
Since Blizzard did the super-extended maintenance when the pre-patch went live, they didn’t have to take everything down to bring the new stuff up. It was a seamless transition. My experience bar even reappeared about five minutes before the Dark Portal opened, which added a bit more anticipation. I did have to reload everything real quick to get the quest to go through the Dark Portal to show up, but that’s the only hiccup I ran into.
Those changes? The return of the Burning Legion is the most noticeable – a vast army of demons that adds a lot to the lore behind World of Warcraft. Thanks to the slower pace of Classic, you’ll find yourself more wrapped up in the storytelling which is so easily missed when you’re simply trying to level up quickly in the modern game. Such an invasion of demons leads to the reopening of the Dark Portal to Outland and oh my, it still feels rather exciting. The Portal itself looks as foreboding as ever, enticing you into a world full of lava, demons, and some terrible perils.
The narrative scope of The Burning Crusade Classic is World of Warcraft at its best, a blend of familiar but well-done fantasy tropes blended with some bizarre sci-fi and metaphysical elements to create a cohesive and compelling story. Some of the game's most iconic villains in 2021 got their spotlight in The Burning Crusade Classic, with Illidan at his unredeemed best still to come and the introduction of Prince Kael'thas all the more impactful now that many players know what awaits him over the span of years following the expansion's release. Revisiting areas of Outland - in particular, Nagrand remains as amazing to explore as it was in 2007 - still evokes the same sense of wonder and scale.
World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade Classic is badass and uncompromising—more than WoW Classic ever was. Most of you can safely give this a pass and enjoy all the extra time you'll have for other games, friends, family, and hobbies. But for WoW Classic's large and devoted community, this is World of Warcraft beginning its transformation into the MMO that took over the world.
